Learn more about our history, mission and community

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, who has enabled us to publish this website for Al-Rahman Mosque. Al-Rahman Mosque represents the largest Muslim community association in Leipzig and offers both Muslims and non-Muslims a place to learn more about Islam.

Our history

Over 30 years of community

1993

The first mosque in Leipzig was...

...built by students in 1993. It was very provisional. On 18. Oktober Straße, students around Sheikh Abul Hussain (Hassan Dabbagh) set up a small mosque in building 4, 6th floor. At that time there were 2–3 converts.

1996

When the students had to move...

...the next mosque was established on Tarostraße. The number of converts rose to 20–30. At the end of 1996 a room on Nürnberger Straße was rented to serve as a mosque.

1996

On Brandenburger Straße...

...a room was also rented. Prayers were held in German, Arabic and Turkish. About 70 people could fit in the room.

1998

In 1998 the building at Roscherstraße 33a was leased...

The community now had a proper building to meet and perform worship. Almost nine years later the building at Roscherstraße 31 was purchased. Hundreds were converting to Islam at that time.

2008

The community grew and so did...

...its tasks. On average, 3–5 people embraced Islam each week. By 2012 more than 5,000 people had converted; after that we stopped counting.

2025

Move to the new mosque

After 25 years at the mosque on Roscherstraße, a new chapter begins for us!

Today

Today our community is the largest...

...and the first in eastern Germany. We welcome about 81 different nationalities.

Our values

We should also mention here that we belong neither to any political party nor to any sect; we are simply a community of Muslims seeking to convey Islam based on authentic sources. We pursue no political goals whatsoever. Our only aim is the pleasure of Allah the Almighty.

We work completely independently of any states or institutions and are therefore fully autonomous.

Our aim is not to spread glorification of violence or stir up unrest. Islam is a religion of peace, tranquility and knowledge. We wish to state clearly that we condemn any violence against civilians and innocent people, whether Muslim or non-Muslim. Islam is a religion that seeks to give people peace and inner calm while encouraging beneficial and praiseworthy deeds.
